Helpful Tips to Organizing Your Paperwork

morningstar general 7

It is especially important for older adults to make sure their paperwork is up-to-date and organized.  This is necessary for not only your own wellbeing but so a family member (be sure to let them know where it is) can access the required documents in the event of an emergency.  Your organization should include all financial and medical records as well as legal documents.

To help you get started, several websites offer downloadable forms including personal medical history forms.  Update this form as needed to reflect changes in your or your loved one’s health and medications and include a family health history.  Your paperwork should also include information regarding your Social Security benefits and Medicare.

Financial documents should include information on stocks, bonds, and mutual fund investments.  You will also want to list all bank accounts and safety deposit boxes as well as credit card accounts.  Include in your financial records any mortgage obligations and other liabilities and debts along with the deeds and titles to property you own.  Don’t forget to add property tax information and your most recent tax return.  In addition record the location of all of your valuables.

Your legal documents should include your Will, a Power of Attorney and an Advance Medical Directive.  These documents cannot be signed by someone who is incapacitated so it is important to do it before the need arises.  An Advance Medical Directive can include a Living Will that allows you to state the type of treatment you may or may not wish to receive if you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself.  You may want to include a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care that allows you to designate a person to make decisions for you in the event you are unable.

MorningStar’s Website is Loaded with Resources for Families

Asisted Living Centennial CO

While MorningStar at Jordan’s first priority is to our residents, we also recognize that helping our families accept the transition to senior living is important.  This is why we have a website filled with useful information and resources regarding all aspects of our community.

We encourage everyone to read the history of MorningStar and about our Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger’s mission to start a senior housing company defined by the human touch.  He explains that he “wanted to re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”  Guided by our Radiance program, you will also learn how we deliver service – with warmth, sincerity and depth.

Furthermore, we understand that senior living decisions are often precipitated by major changes, which is why we provide a guide that details various retirement options.  One recommendation we offer is to clearly identify what you are trying to solve, and to think about not just next year, but rather the next 5 to 10 years.  We encourage you to read our points to consider for help in determining if assisted living is the best solution for you, your parent or spouse.  In addition you will find some of the troubling signs that could signal the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, however please keep in mind that only a neurologist can make a diagnosis.

Once you have reached the decision to move to an assisted living or memory care community, we advise you to set up a tour.  Typically the healthier spouse or child of the senior does the initial tour to rule out unsuitable options and narrow down the search.  We recommend not trying to do more than two tours a day as you will get a lot of information to take in and process.  Please contact MorningStar at Jordan if we can be of any help or if you have questions or would like to set up a tour of our wonderful community.

Our Community Offers a Wide Range of Services

morningstar general 12

While MorningStar at Jordan is proud to provide high-quality assisted living and memory care for seniors, we also provide our families with some lesser known services.  One example is our Companion Living option that is designed for two unrelated people of the same sex to share an assisted living or memory care suite.

This is an ideal solution for those wishing to share expenses as the rent of the suite is split between the two residents as well as a way to build a lasting friendship.  Even if you do not have someone in mind to share a suite, we will help you find a roommate and go to great lengths to match you with an individual who has common interests and similar background.

A roommate can also help to ease your transition to senior living.  You and your roommate can look out for one another, and as you are familiar with each another’s habits and personalities, may be the first person to notice changes in health and abilities.  Shared lives can help to boost health through improved sleeping patterns and an increased appetite.  When you take advantage of companion living, you are still offered all of the personalized care and first-class amenities extended to our other residents.

We also feel privileged to have veterans as part of our community and when we hear of vets who are interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to the local resources that can expertly handle their application process for “Aid & Attendance.”  This is monthly benefit payments extended through the V.A. to certain wartime Veterans (and their survivors) with financial need and physician orders for regular assistance with the activities of daily living.

Please visit our website to learn more about these and our other programs designed to serve our seniors.  Offering both assisted living and memory care, we are committed to giving our residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

We Are a Pet Friendly Community

At MorningStar at Jordan, we understand that your pet is an important part of your family and you would not wish to move somewhere that he or she was not welcome.  If you decide to choose our beautiful senior living community for your new home, no worries – we are pet friendly!  In fact our Life Enrichment Coordinator, Jill Fishman, kindly shares her dog Cocoa with the entire MorningStar at Jordan community.  Cocoa’s busy day is spent personally greeting friends and “patiently” waiting for the many affectionate pats she receives.

More and more research seems to bear out that owning and caring for a pet can actually be good for seniors’ health and wellbeing.  One such recent study reported on by A Place for Mom’s website suggests that, “just 15 minutes bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone cortisol and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop.”

Researchers found that interactions between pets and their owners can help to fight off depression and lower cholesterol levels.  There is even some evidence to suggest the relationship may help to protect against heart disease and stroke.  Scientists’ reason that pets may help the elderly to feel more connected to the here and now as the pet requires daily attention and care.  Furthermore, the animals themselves offer unconditional love, unending affection and emotional support.

Pet therapy programs are growing in popularity and used in settings such as hospitals, mental health centers, convalescent homes and child centers.  Studies show that many people who participate in pet therapy programs have an improvement in their appetite as well as improvement in their social interactions and cognitive skills.  In addition the acceptance and non-verbal communication of animals can be soothing for those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

Offering First-class Services for our Residents

Memory Care

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, our priority is to offer residents exceptional services. Along with a broad range of wellness programs and activities, a salon, chapel/theatre, general store, bistro, fitness room and much more, we also offer our seniors three daily meals prepared by our own Executive Chef.

In October 2015, we were pleased to welcome Chef Edward Gilbert to our community. With a bachelor’s degree from the New England Culinary Institute, he has worked in the restaurant business for much of his career. Brazilian-born, he spent his early years in Brazil, where he was raised eating fresh, local foods including mangos, fish, oranges, nuts and coffee. Portuguese was his only language until his family immigrated to Nebraska when he was six-years old. He attributes his background, which practiced farm-to-table food preparation as a way of life, for kindling his passion for food.

What sets Chef Edward’s culinary skills apart from other senior living communities is that his meals not only evoke memories of his home but also offer an exceptional dining experience for our residents. Under his direction, Chef Edward is developing true farm-to-table meals that do not rely on reheating food from cans or the freezer. He also vigorously sources ingredients locally, seasonally and sustainably.

Chef Edward also put our MorningStar garden to good use this summer. Furthermore, he is treating residents to monthly cooking exhibitions in our Life Enrichment Room. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about our homey senior living community. While you are there, take a look at the pictures of Chef Edward’s five-course dinner for the July’s “Secret Supper” he prepared for the members of The Coloradoan Eat + Drink Club.
